My Secret Sauce

five ways in which I think I have human capital that is truly unique

I took a Strengths Quest test, and I was issued five of my top strengths out of the 25+ strengths list.

1.  Harmony - I am great mediator. For conflict resolution or negotiations, I do a great job at finding what's fair for both sides and that helps achieve balance in a situation.

2. Arranger - I am strong in finding and sorting different elements of a bigger picture. This makes me an individual that can be trusted to determine roles for people/subjects.

3. Communication - My communication skills are excellent. I know how to speak four different languages - English, Haitian Creole, French, and Mandarin Chinese. I am proficient in public speaking.

4. Individualization - I can correctly identify what makes a unique individual. I am strong in judging the details to people.

5. Restorative - Because of the harmony quality, I am proficient in restoring situations or troubleshooting. Because of this quality, I have a self-driven passion to restore things back to the way they were.

Interviews

Interview 1 - My bigger sister, Tamie
Summary: Tamie said my top 5 important attributes were related to: leadership, compassion, communication, perseverance, and organization. She said that those qualities allow me to be persistent in achieving goals.

Interview 2 - My brother-in-law, Justin

Summary: Justin said that he agreed with Tamie's list. He said that I positive sense about me, and, to him, he can see how that would make more approachable. He also mentioned that he would agree my organizational skills allow me to achieve multiple goals.

Interview 3 - My big sister, Lisa

Summary: Lisa said that I am a very rational thinker. He agreed with Justin that my most important attribute is being a deep thinker. She says it will help in the long run if I successfully pave a path to being my own boss.

Interview 4 - My mother

Summary: Mom said a lot of what everyone else had on their list. She did say that one of my most attributes is my integrity; even though she admitted that this could also be a weakness, she says that most of the time she sees it as my strength.

Interview 5   - My nephew

Summary: My nephew agreed with about 95% of what everyone said was important to describe in my secret sauce. He does say that he can see me as a fair leader, who understands how to treat people well as an authority figure.

Reflection:

I feel like my family sees a promising future for me. They mostly agreed that I know how to be an organized boss who would lead with rational-mindedness and pride for what I do. I'm happy that I did the interviews. They expanded upon what I thought were my most important attributes. They were able to speak from such a rare and interesting perspective because they've seen my growth while looking from the outside. I wouldn't make any corrections to my list; I would just make them more detailed with the important points that my family suggested.

  1. The Strengths Quest test is pretty cool; I remember in an introductory business class, the students all had to take it and reflect on their results. From the interviews, it seems that the 'Arranger' strength is the most apparent. Organization was a common characteristic that was mentioned, and maybe that characteristic is what lays the foundation for the other attributes from the Strengths Quest test.

  2. Brian, I too am good with arranging things and understand how much of a positive capital effect this can have. I definitely think that because you were able to interview your close family who have watched you grow, they can easily reflect on how you have changed over the years and provide a much more detailed and observant perspective.

  3. Brian, I think you did a great job on this assignment! I do think, however, that what you feel is your own strengths will always be more important than what a strength test can tell you. It's great to see that all the people who know you the best say that you have a great future and great leadership skills!

  4. Brian,
Your interviews were quite in depth and definitely must have helped you view yourself from a different perspective. Though I'm not sure a Stengths Quest Quiz would be the best way to evaluate yourself, its results seem to align pretty well with your interviews. Your sister stated that you're positive and a great goal-setter which goes hand-in-hand with your first traits.

  5. Hey Brian, first off I would like to say that I like how you took the strengths test to determine your best traits instead of just going off of your own personal opinion and then the interviews. It gave an outside opinion that was necessary to understand you more completely. It seems like for the most part your leadership was a trait that everyone identified as being most important. Nice post and work!

  6. Brian,
It was interesting idea to take a test to give you some of your strengths, while at the same time I think introspective thinking may have been a better indicator for yourself. I think the idea that you're a deep thinker adds to your strengths in other areas. For example, deep thinking allows for easier communication, how to best arrange, and determine the best way to restore.

  7. Hi Brian,
I think it was a good idea to take a test to help identify your strengths and I think that gave great context to this post. I think that having your family evaluate those traits was something that was allowed you to gain a deeper perspective about yourself and what your strengths are and it lead you to be able to call yourself an "organized boss." Great job!
